It pays to walk in East Harlem.

To help combat obesity, the city plans to pay five community groups up to $2,000 each to arrange walking tours along the new 3.5-mile East Harlem Walking Trail.

The neighborhood is one of 12 identified by the city as lacking parks, open spaces and access to healthy food.

“In East Harlem, issues of obesity, lack of physical activity, and social isolation have been raised as major issues,” the Health Department’s Fund for Public Health said in a proposal request.

“The community-developed walking trail provides a designated space . . . that not only encourages physical activity but also highlights the neighborhood’s history, culture and resources.”

Grants will be awarded later this month.  The $3.5 million path runs along sidewalks from 106th to 115th streets. Tours will run through at least November.
